    Land Above
I recently began work on the Land Above story again. It still needs a new title. I rewrote the sections on Kenneth today and have now pretty much rewritten all of the original story. This was supposed to be more of a science fiction story but it is now turning into a fantasy story. I may have to limit Kenneth's presence a bit more. I'm also reading (or at least attempting to read) manga again. I finished the first volume of the Orphen manga (Majutsushi Orphen) that I got when I was in Hakodate. I don't remember how much of the manga I read when I was in Hakodate but it is still kind of hard for me to read. I also read a couple of sections of Inuyasha and was surprised at how easy it is to read. I still need to look up kanji of course but the language (and even the kanji selection) appears to be much simpler.
In the late afternoon I finished preparing a plot for this month's potatoes. We can probably plant it tomorrow (assuming it doesn't rain).

    Found a few more potatoes
I started preparing the ground today to eventually plant more potatoes and in the process, found a few more rather large ones and a couple of smaller ones too. Somehow we missed them yesterday. I also got a little more of the Land Above story written. I ran to grandma's apartment in the afternoon and it was dinner and dominoes as usual. Grandma's getting pretty fast at it but can't find the double blank tile.

    Disappointing Harvest
It's been six months since I planted this particular plot of sweet potatoes so I dug them up today. It was extremely disappointing - I should have waited another month or two. In fact, the plant wasn't flowering yet either which in retrospect seems to indicate that it is also ready to be harvested. Instead of nice, large potatoes (a pound or more each), I got a whole bunch of small, almost bite-sized potatoes. These will be consumed anyway but I'm still disappointed.
I took off Friday (June 17) and ran a bunch of errands. I also began making a pattern for the Macross uniform. Friday night was at Alison's place - Mark, Dan, and Ross Plumgrove (the other Ross).

    Pretty exhausted
This week has thus far been pretty exhausting. I've been attempting to work on the Land Above story each night but I've only managed to write maybe one complete section and three partially complete sections. Usually I'm too tired to write much.
I went running on Sunday (June 12) and then again on Tuesday (June 14) and sort of struggled both times - my legs are still tight from doing Lanipo last weekend. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
Work has been pretty boring as of late. Regressions and more regressions. Ryan says it should get better soon.

    Aftermath of Lanipo
I'm still really tired and it is a bit irritating. I went running this afternoon (after sort of half-heartedly working in the yard) and struggled to run the normal route to Grandma's house. My muscles hurt and for some reason, my arms hurt! Anyway aside from that, I wrote another section in the land above story and got not much else done. Sometimes I wonder where all the time in the day goes.

    Lanipo...by accident
Ross wanted to do Wa'ahila Ridge again (according to him, it is one of the easier ones - I disagree). However, we ended up at Lanipo instead. Neither of us could remember exactly where the Wa'ahila Ridge trail started nor could remember how to get there. We're still not quite sure. Anyway, since we were there, we decided to do Lanipo. The beginning was pretty nice. However, after we got to the third hill or so, the plants began to get thickly overgrown and wet. I was soon soaking wet from waist down. It got progressively worse as the clouds rolled in and the wind began to howl. However, we continued on past the fourth, fifth, and sixth major hills. Ross' knees began to hurt and he decided to turn around on the sixth hill. I continued on though and made it to the end after going over the seventh hill and up the last part. The clouds were really thick and I couldn't see anything. I didn't spend a whole lot of time at the top and made my way back down again. I didn't see Ross until around the third hill. The sun came and went and it rained on us at various points on the way out. We started at around 8 and finished a bit after 1. Lanipo is still really hard.
I was quite dirty and I had to clean myself off after getting back home. I was kind of surprised at how tired I was and ended up sleeping for the rest of the afternoon. Aside from the hike, I didn't get much else done today.

    House-sitting
Alison went to Las Vegas with Scott et al and I've been house-sitting for her. Sort of.

    June 6 2011 (Monday)
I walked over to Ala Moana, then Walmart, and then headed up to UH. It was a longer walk than I expected it would be. I met Kamana outside of the International House and we walked even more - this time to visit the Hawaiian Studies building. I headed back down to Grandma's apartment and got there quite late. Probably later than I've ever gotten there.

    June 7 2011 (Tuesday)
We went running in the afternoon and did the normal 10K. Afterward, I showered, ate, and then walked over to Alison's place to spend the rest of the evening. I slept in the living room this time and found it to be much quieter than the rooms in the back. I also started reading Michio Kaku's Hyperspace.

    June 8 2011 (Wednesday)
I headed over to Alison's place after dinner and Ross came over shortly after. We watched part of Inception but as it was becoming late, we didn't finish it.

    June 9 2011 (Thursday)
Alison's supposed to come back today so I didn't go over. I'll probably visit her tomorrow whether or not we do anything. Aside from that, I did the normal Saturday run after dropping off my stuff at the apartment.

    Hail in Waikiki
The weather's been pretty strange around here lately. There were thundershowers for the latter part of last week followed by more last night (June 4). There was a pretty bright lightning show over the Windward side. Ross later told me they were getting rain at the rate of around 4 inches an hour. He also said there was hail reported in Waikiki earlier last week. In an aside, the building was shutting off power this weekend so that they could do maintenance. We had to power down the lab and that was to begin at 4:30 on Friday afternoon (June 3). However, the lights were flickering during the morning and early afternoon (it actually caused an upgrade I was doing to fail, the first time it's ever happened to me) and it left all of us wondering if the power would still be on at 4:30 to make shutting down the lab necessary. Anyway, the power did stay on so we shut everything off but the weather was still bad.
Anyway, we decided it probably wasn't a good idea to go hiking this weekend (Ross planned to go on Sunday). Reported lightning strikes didn't help. We pushed it out to next week.
Aside from all of that, I'm still watching Macross and working on the Land Above story. Janxi is now explaining to Trisha what is going on.

    Macross
I've been watching Macross (Robotech) when there's time and I came across an episode which consists entirely of Rick's dreams. I was really amused. It actually played out like how dreams (my dreams anyway) work. The various bits of story up until that episode were mashed together and mixed up with some rather ridiculous elements (like the flying magical bicycle with the moon as a backdrop). I even had to watch parts of that episode more than once.
Aside from that, I've been working on the Land Above story and have finally gotten Trisha out of the hospital and into the lab. We'll see how long she has to sit around there.
Due to graduation tonight, I had to run extremely early. It was hot, humid, and it took me 39 minutes to finish the normal Saturday run. I'm still pretty wasted from it. I didn't get anything done outside in the afternoon (everything was running kind of late anyway).

    The Cleaning Continues
I went over to Alison's place yesterday (May 31) after running and helped her haul stuff out for bulk pickup. After we were through, we'd hauled out nearly all of the old carpet, a TV, and a very old computer monitor and printer (dot matrix). In fact, there's still more to go. We also packed the books for donation into Alison's trunk and hauled more stuff into the garage for donation later. It still amazes me how much stuff there is to clean up. Tiff isn't making it much easier either - Alison let Tiff store some of her junk on the first floor and now there's a huge pile of it in the middle of the room.
Today wasn't quite as exciting. I saw the last episode of the five part series, 99 Years of Love, a story about the Japanese-American experience. It was quite interesting and I learned a lot of things that I never quite saw in books like "Farewell to Manzanar."
I hope to get a couple more sections of Land Above written....

    Four Day Weekend
I took off Friday (May 27) due to being over the limit for PTO. It was a fairly productive Friday.

    May 27 (Friday)
I ran errands in the morning and bought the normal papayas. This time I also got some sweet potatoes (non-Okinawan variety) and some lavender. I cleaned some of the apartment in the afternoon and watched more Macross. It's not that bad. Later in the afternoon I headed over to Alison's place and cleaned up the downstairs a bit more. Dan came over and helped me move some of the dressers back upstairs. I also learned that Alison was leaving for somewhere that night. So much for the normal Friday night party. Apparently, Scott moved it to his place anyway though.
I went back to my apartment to eat dinner and then headed out to Scott's place. Dan, Ross, Ben and family were all there. Eventually Dan and Ross began playing Borderlands (what Scott, Justin, et al. have been playing in place of Halo) and they did that until around 3:30 or 4 AM. I played this game on Scott's iPod until I got too tired to continue. I didn't actually go to sleep until around 4 AM though.

    May 28 (Saturday)
We were supposed to go hiking but due to everyone sleeping way too late, we didn't. I just barely got up in time for lunch. After lunch, we visited the graveyards and then I did some work in the yard before falling asleep for the rest of the night. I got up to take a shower and then slept until Sunday morning. I didn't even go running.

    May 29 (Sunday)
I should have gotten up early but I don't think I did. I worked on the Crescent Project Group background for a while and am now thinking about scrapping the whole VCMA idea and maybe using trees and sky as a background. In the late afternoon, my parents had a cookout and I went running. I ran the Scott-Alison run and then joined everyone for dinner. After dinner we played dominoes but this time made it through two games.

    May 30 (Monday)
Not a lot happened today. I dug up the Land Above story and began working on it again. I did some work in the yard and cleaned up the compost pile a bit.

    Macross/Robotech
I finally started watching Macross (Robotech). The animation looks a little dated and the story even feels a little dated but it's not that bad. There are a few technical issues though. I've made it through the first 6 episodes.
I went running earlier with Mike (and Thanh though he covered 3 miles). It took a while, nearly an hour 10. I suppose I'll have to run hard on Saturday and Sunday now.

    Speech 19
    May 25 2011 (Wednesday)
I did speech 19 today - the fact finding report. I ended up using the topic of balancing the need for respect of Native Hawaiian burials versus the rights of property owners to develop their land. I never thought I would talk about such a topic and yet somehow I pulled it off today. I never thought I would read the EIS for the rail transit project either though. Or a burial treatment plan. I think I surprised a lot of people (including myself). I'm not sure it was the most interesting topic for the audience though. Anyway, speech 20 is already more or less planned out - Escape from Quadratic City (the abstract topic).

Events of the past few days

    May 16 2011 (Monday)
I went to that tea store at Ala Moana after work but again did not find powdered green tea. In fact, they didn't have any due to the events in Japan (earthquake, subsequent tsunami, and the nuclear disaster afterward). It may be a while before they have powdered green tea. I headed back to Nijiya Market and after suppressing brief panic (everything, even the signs, were in Japanese) I managed to find what I thought was powdered green tea. I later learned that while it was powdered, it wasn't powdered quite fine enough (ie for tea ceremony). We ended up having to strain after steeping. I later spent the rest of the evening at Grandma's apartment.

    May 17 2011 (Tuesday)
I went running in the afternoon and after being held up by John, I had to run pretty hard to try and catch up with the others. As it would turn out, I never actually caught up with any of them - they were all waiting for me at the end. I did manage to complete the 10K in a little over 45 minutes though.

    May 18 2011 (Wednesday)
I'm not sure what happened on Wednesday. I think I worked on Pauly and redrew his crest. I invented either a Parrotoo or a Cockarrot, both of which sound pretty bad. I took the head of a sulfur-crested cockatoo and plastered it on a scarlet macaw.

    May 19 2011 (Thursday)
Art's dinner was at the Plaza Club so I headed over there after work. I actually headed over to my apartment even before finishing up work (to drop stuff off). "It" arrived today (I then spent the rest of the week wondering what I should do about it). Anyway, Alison eventually joined us for dinner (she was late as usual). Much like the last presentation/dinner, some guys talked about the state of the markets while we had pupus, dinner, and dessert. The talk was pretty interesting. Aside from the fact that they wouldn't really tell us what to do for a given situation (ie should I invest in Apple), they did explain somewhat how the federal reserve, deficit, and taxes all work. In particular, they talked about an optimal tax rate (without telling us what it is, of course). After dinner, I got a call from Ryan saying the builds were finally ready. Rather than try and access the systems remotely, I headed back into work and ended up staying there until after 10:30.

    May 20 2011 (Friday)
The normal Friday night party was at Alison's place once again but this time without Alison. She went off to dinner with Tiffany and left Dan and myself to our own devices. I think Dan spent the rest of the night playing Rock Band. I pulled an Alison and fell asleep (first in her mom's room and then downstairs). I slept from around 6 to 11:30 so I was pretty well rested when I finally got up. Alison still wasn't around though I later learned that she did come back and then leave again. When Alison finally did come back, we did some cleanup and put some things back in place. The cabinets for both bathrooms were installed at some point during the week so we put the back half-bath mirror back on the wall.

    May 21 2011 (Saturday)
Today was supposed to be the end of the world. If you are reading this, you probably've realized that it wasn't. Anyway, aside from that, we went hiking this morning. Ross, Dan, and I gathered at Alison's house and headed over to Makiki Valley to hike around the Makiki Loop trail (Cullen was in respite). The trail was a lot easier than I remember it being and we managed to complete it in about 2.5 hours or so (more or less just as predicted). Dan had some problems on the uphill sections and Alison had some problems on the downhill sections but otherwise it was pretty nice. Despite the rain it never got that muddy.
We hung out at Alison's house until noon and then I sort of took a nap before lunch (lunch turned out to be late). After the normal lunch at McDonald's with Grandma, we all headed over to Thomas Square to check out the plant sale (my sister and Derek also came along). Apparently they had lavender earlier but had run out by the time we got there. Instead, I got a type of yellow ginger (terra cotta) and another type of odd ginger that is pink/white and grows near the ground. My mom got two miniature rose plants (the buds can be strung into lei).
I spent the rest of the afternoon in the garden planting everything, mulching, and cleaning. I ran the normal 4 miles afterward.

Blue-haired people will naturally have blue eyebrows....
Apparently, that point was lost to me since I've been coloring characters (probably around 2003). Of course, blue-haired people (if any could be found) will have blue eyebrows, blue eyelashes, blue beards, blue mustaches, etc. So the blue-haired Liam should have blue eyebrows. As should Matt, Kim, Ji Won, et al. It only occurred to me when I was doing the finishing touches on the gray-haired David. I suddenly realized that if David's hair is gray, his eyebrows should also be gray. Then it dawned on me that blue-haired people should have blue eyebrows. The worst was yet to come - as Patrick has (un)naturally brown hair, so should his eyebrows also be brown. Funny how I've never noticed it. Funny how no one else has either. I suppose it's time to start considering truly outlandishly colored hair.

    The Carpet Finally Goes In
    May 12, 2011
I went running with the usual suspects on Thursday afternoon and covered the normal 10K distance in a little over 55 minutes. I started later than usual and I didn't see Mike until I think I was finished with Magic Island. After running, I showered and headed over to Alison's place. We finished cleaning up her living room/dinning room area and began taking the carpet from the areas Cullen probably wouldn't go. We also moved the dinning table into the living room (Dan helped me with this one). Prior to this night, I asked Alison multiple times if I should take Friday (May 13) off so that I could explain how the furniture was to be moved back once the carpet was in. Alison replied multiple times that I didn't have to take off (and that she would feel bad if I used my vacation time for such a non-restful purpose). So I didn't put in a PTO request and I expected to be met by either Tiff (or even possibly Dan) in the morning once we finished moving the old carpet out. Well, it came down to Alison not trusting Tiff and not telling Dan or I that she wanted us to be around. Until tonight. Sigh. After Dan left, I went to sleep in the downstairs bedroom.

    May 13, 2011
Long day. I woke up at 5:00 and then again at 6 AM. I think I finally stayed up at 6:30 and I didn't really go upstairs until 7 when it was clear that Alison and Cullen were both up. After Cullen left around 7:30, Alison and I rolled up the rest of the carpet pieces and I hauled them to the garage. She vacuumed for a short while and then headed off to work. At 8 AM, the guys came to install the carpet and I went downstairs to wait until they were done. I ended up reading, sleeping, and otherwise sitting around doing practically nothing until they were finished at 10:30 AM. They vacuumed and then left after I signed the forms saying they had finished the job. I then headed off to work and didn't get in until a little after 11. I called Ryan earlier in the morning and explained that I would be a little late but not this late. I ended up at work until almost 7 (in the evening). None of Alison's furniture was in place either so I ended up calling Dan and Ross for help and Scott supposedly should have stopped by (but he didn't - I guess he's busy with preparations for the China trip). Alison was doing Bible study with one of her friends (Nalani) and some others via conference call. Meanwhile, Dan and I moved some of the furniture back and we continued that even after their Bible study was done and Ross came. We moved most of the large pieces back into place and then set up the room for DDR. It was that for the rest of the night (until 1 AM).

    May 14, 2011
I got up at around 11:30 as is usual now for Saturday mornings. In the afternoon, I worked on the VCMA model and did the roof for Morgan/Katrina's house. I also worked in the yard and planted more sweet potatoes. These should be ready for harvest in November. I went running later in the afternoon and there was dinner afterward. During dinner, grandma discovered YouTube on the iPhone and the rest of us were quite amused. Meanwhile, I had to remember the names of all the people she likes to listen to.

    Mark Shi and Kamana
Mark Shi came to visit yesterday (May 9) at lunch. I joined a bunch of PV guys that normally eat in the PV "lunchroom" along with Caden and Felma (both of who normally eat at their respective desks). Mark seems to be doing well thus far - he's not too bitter yet. I later joined the normal group of people I eat with downstairs.
After work, I had to go over to Alison's house to help her move stuff. She hurt her back sleeping I'm told...and now she can't easily do anything. I cleared out the bathrooms as the cabinets came in. Hopefully, the guy will come to install them before Friday. I then went over to UH and met up with Kamana (International Gateway). He's going to graduate soon, possibly this weekend. After that, I walked down to my grandma's apartment and got there quite late.
Today (May 10) was more of the usual. I went running in the afternoon with a rather large group of people - there are 7 of us...! Aside from that, I nearly missed dinner after falling asleep.

    11:58 pm
Battle of the Home Improvement stores
Lowe's just opened up a week or so ago and now they, Home Depot, and City Mill are all within walking distance of each other (as also is Costco, which we learned also sells home improvement materials once in a while). We went over to Lowe's today and it appears that they have a slightly different variety of things for sale than the other two stores. I was not able to find lavender their or at Home Depot though (City Mill wouldn't have it).
I spent part of the afternoon working on the VCMA roofs and then went running. Since Mother's Day dinner is at my sister's place tonight, I ran the Scott-Alison run and then after finishing it, walked down to my sister's apartment. Dinner progressed as usual except that I have a suspicion that my sister is trying to fatten me up. After dinner, we played dominoes and as has been the case, the host won.
